**Always follow the instructions in your repair manual when doing repair or maintenance work on your motorcycle. Clymer makes a good repair manual for the Kawasaki KLR 650.**

This video shows how to change the oil and oil filter on a 2009 Kawasaki KLR 650. The tools used to do the oil and filter change are:

Torque wrench for foot pounds
Oil drain pan

Specifications:
-Bolts for oil filter cover are tightened to 78 in.-lbs

-Oil Capacity without oil filter change: 2.3 qts or 2 quarts & 9.6 ounces

The oil I used in this KLR is Mobil 10W-40 Synthetic Motorcycle oil. The oil filter is OEM from Kawasaki part number: 16099-004.

  1. thanks for this upload, does the tool kit that comes with the bike provide tools to take off those bolts?

  2. Thanks man! Good job! Just got mine finished! Just like you said! Weird how the tool kit wont work…

  3. Great video thanks. I have the 2009 Kawasaki XL250SF. Your bikes engine as far as placement looks pretty similar to mine. Can’t find a video on an oil change for my exact model. Would it be the same as your model or do you have any tips on what would be different for my model.

  4. Excellent video! After a long time of aiming at one of the BMW GS line for my next bike, I’ve been very recently recommended to look at the KLR650. I just got the Clymer manual for it in the mail yesterday. I’m a bit fanatic about using lockwire on oil system bolts, and caps. Since I’ve not yet seen the underside of the KLR wondering is there a solid simple place on the oil pan to drill a hole to anchor lockwire for the oil drain plug?

  5. Great video!! You were very informative. I look forward to more types in the future. Thanks again. I just bought my 2009 klr and love it. Time for my first oil change and I wanted to get it right.

  6. What type of torque wrench is that?  I’ve been hesitant to purchase a wrench because of all the stories of inaccurate wrenches out there.

  7. Very informative and good camera angle. Thank you also for using a tripod, most people don’t lol.
