Howto: Replace Motorcycle Rear Brake Pads in 10 mins (’09 Ninja 250)

Howto: Replace Motorcycle Rear Brake Pads in 10 mins (’09 Ninja 250)
As a follow-up to my front brake pad replacement video I decided to film the service of my friend Diemuzi (Sammie’s) rear brake pads on his 2009 Kawasaki Ninja 250. This bike is identical from 2008-2010 (at time of this writing.)

The parts and procedure is practically the same, only the caliper mounting bolts differ, and the fact that the exhaust is somewhat in your way.

  1. Thanks for this great video. I like your enthusiasm and quick explanations. Sometimes it gets annoying when I’m just trying to find information and people drag on talking about irrelevant things. But do you take the pistons completely off the caliper to clean them? That part I didn’t understand completely because you didn’t show the cleaning. Thanks!

  2. Also, can you do a valve adjustment video on a 08-12 ninja 250. I am desperately looking for a video on this because no one seems to want to attempt it. The 08-12 procedure is much different from the older bikes’ procedure. There’s one explanation I found (google Kawasaki Ninja EX250J8F Valve Clearance adjustment) but I will only attempt the job if I can find a good video demonstrating the work because a video is obviously better than an instruction guide with a few pictures.

  3. I don’t want to attempt it either, but I am overdue, I may have to! ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Thanks for the compliments! I always try to do things quickly without the fluff. Leave the pistons in the caliper. Sometimes you can just dust them off, sometimes a degreaser or brake cleaner works well then swab them as necessary. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. On my rear caliper, one pad has worn much more than the other.ย  Is that normal?

  6. I havve a question i did everything like you did but when i went to remove 2nd bbrake pad there was a clip on top right of pad and went to grab it and it fell and now i ccant figure out how clip goes in and can’t find any good books or videos or anything to show me how that clip sits near pad.please help and i put it all together without clip and they work great ,do i need that tiny clip ?

  8. took me more than 10 minutes ๐Ÿ™‚ย
But thanks! awesome video and it pointed me in the right direction

  9. My rotors are warped tonns from previous owner, he didnt bed in pads, went to put new ones in today and warped rotors, looks like im up for a big bill

  10. Yo, what brand of brakes and ID number (if there is one) do you use? I’m about to buy some new brake pads for my own ninja250r 2009, but I wonder which ones I need to buy. ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. are new brake pads supposed to be touching the rotors while you ride? I just changed my front and rear brake pads and they rubbing against the rotors even if I am not using the brakes…

  12. My exhaust is blocking the brake pad completely. I have a 2010. How would I work around this?

  13. so I cleaned my front pistons cause they were really dirty..when the piston came out, so did a lot of brake fluid..Now the piston is back in and won’t come out..stupid question but is it because quite a bit of brake fluid came out.? putting new brake fluid in should make the piston come out..??? I’m hoping I don’t have to buy a new caliper…please let me know..first time doing this…

  14. Caliper pins are 13 ft-lbs
Caliper mount screws are 18 ft-lbs
I found this in the service manual!

If one pad is worn more than the other then inspect the caliper holder shaft for damage. If it’s not damaged then prep it with a high temp chassis grease. If damage is present then replace holder shaft.

Not in the service manual; Lube the pins with a very light coat of high temp chassis grease. Don’t get it on anything else.
If one piston moves while pumping the brake then there is stiction. Work both pistons back and forth by hand until they both move in unison at the push of the brake. If they don’t then inspect/replace piston and/or seal.
